Characteristics of wetting and dispersing additives

Wetting generally refers to the spreading of a liquid on a solid surface. It's more about lowering surface tension, which is a short-lived process. Dispersion refers to the mechanical process in which pigment particles are free from each other. In the production of coatings, it means that the pigment and filler particles after entering the water phase system exist stably in the form of small particles in the water phase, and are evenly distributed without re-aggregation. This is a long-term process.

In general, a wetting agent is a substance that makes a solid material more wettable by water. By reducing its surface tension or interfacial tension, water can spread on the surface of the solid material or penetrate into its surface, thereby wetting the solid material.

A dispersant is a surfactant that has two opposite properties of lipophilicity and hydrophilicity in the molecule. It can uniformly disperse solid particles of inorganic and organic pigments that are difficult to dissolve in liquid, and at the same time prevent the sedimentation and aggregation of solid particles to form a stable suspension.

Wetting agents and dispersants both play a role in dispersing pigments. The combination of the two can play a synergistic effect, making the pigment and filler particles stably dispersed in the paint in a more delicate form.
